Imagine!’s Dayspring department has been providing parent education and therapeutic services to children (ages birth to three) for more than 30 years. Dayspring believes that the family is the child’s first teacher, and takes a whole child approach to encourage parents and children to build upon their strengths. Dayspring provides services and supports to children where they live, learn, and play.

Thank You, Community Foundation Serving Boulder County

We’d like to express our sincere gratitude to The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County for its recent grant of $1,000 to go toward Imagine!’s Case Management Emergency Fund for families living in Boulder County.

Through the Emergency Fund, Imagine! provides limited financial assistance to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) meet urgent or extraordinary needs not covered by Medicaid or other funding sources. Examples of approved expenses include mental health services, extraordinary medical bills, respite care during times of upheaval, IV sedation for dental procedures, short-term housing for clients at risk of homelessness, and home modifications for clients with decreasing mobility.

The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County has long supported Imagine! and many other worthy organizations that make our community stronger, happier, and healthier. We appreciate their commitment to our community and all of its citizens.

Community Leaders Meet In Support Of Imagine!’s Mission

Last Friday, Imagine! CEO Mark Emery and Imagine! Foundation Executive Director Patti Micklin met with local community leaders and longtime supporters of Imagine! to discuss the current state of Imagine!, as well as the future of services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in Boulder and Broomfield counties.

Participants shared ideas and explored challenges and areas of opportunity. We are so fortunate to have access to community leaders who are willing to act as a sounding board as we work to create a world of opportunity for all.

Meeting attendees included former Longmont Mayor Leona Stoecker, former Imagine! Foundation Executive Director Susan LaHoda, Foundation Board member Walt Pounds, former Foundation Board member Kathy Coyne, former Boulder City Council member George Karakehian, and former Foundation Board member Jay Montgomery.

We thank them all for their insight and wisdom, as well as for their belief in the potential of all.

Wish List Wednesday - Spread The Word To End The Word Edition

For today’s “Wish List Wednesday,” we’re wishing for the elimination of the "r-word" from everyday language.

Today is Spread The Word To End The Word Day! 

Imagine!'s Innovations department and their Innovations Advocacy Council would like to remind everyone that "Respect" starts with the words that we use on a daily basis. We all know that it is not always easy to stop using words that have become industry standards, but through the commitment of many, including people accepting service from Imagine!, family members, and those supporting individuals in services, a cultural change can occur.

The Power of a Word

Words can hold great power, and it is through our words that we can potentially hurt or demean others. The council has created some alternative word choices to use:

• Instead of using “consumer” or “client,” use “individuals with disabilities” or “people with disabilities,” or better yet, refer to individuals simply as people and/or individuals. 
• Instead of using the terminology “high-functioning/low-functioning,” try to explain the parameters of the situation. For example, instead of saying high-functioning, you could say that the person is independent in the community and requires minimal supports. Instead of saying low-functioning, you could say the individual requires additional assistance with daily living tasks. 
• Above all else, we should never use the "r-word." While everyone understands that this is an official diagnosis, there are other ways in which to express the diagnosis such as developmental disability or intellectual disability, and plain and simple, this word is offensive regardless if it is used clinically or not.

Thank You Thursday - Imagine! Celebration Edition

Today, we’d like to thank all of those involved with The Imagine! Celebration, held Friday, January 27, 2017. The event was a huge success. Although the numbers aren’t official yet, the preliminary total of what we brought in was more than $360,000! What a generous community we have!

Dayspring believes that the family is the child’s first teacher, and takes a whole child approach to encourage parents and children to build upon their strengths. Dayspring provides services and supports to children where they live, learn, and play.

Last week, the Knights of Columbus Council 05237, from Lafayette, presented a check for $4,500 to help support Imagine!’s Dayspring Community Calendar Activities. Imagine! Foundation Executive Director Patti Micklin was delighted to be on hand to receive the funds from these good Knights.

Dayspring’s Community Calendar Activities (CCA) program brings children aged 0-3 with developmental disabilities and delays (and their families) into community facilities such as recreation centers, dance studios, and children’s museums for group play, educational opportunities, and fitness activities with the support of an Imagine! Pediatric Occupational Therapist and an Early Childhood Special Educator. Each session is geared toward encouraging motor, sensory, social, emotional, cognitive, and/or speech and language development. As the Therapist and Educator assist the children, they model for parents the behaviors that encourage and support each child’s individual development in a community play setting. CCA helps build the confidence of parents as their children participate in activities in the community, while empowering community businesses and nonprofits to feel comfortable about welcoming children with special needs.

We are so thankful for the Lafayette Knights for their longtime support of this vital program.
