Thank You, Olive Garden

Big thanks to the Olive Garden restaurant in Boulder. They contacted us last week to provide a lunch or dinner to some Imagine! folks who have suffered during the flood. Last Thursday they treated Cari Pounds (on the left in photo), who is served by Imagine!, and Direct Care Professional Kristin Conboy (on the right) to a lovely dinner. Kristin and Cari live in Imagine!’s Tenino home, which was damaged by the floods. In addition to the flood damage, Tenino is having its kitchen remodeled (bad timing for sure) so the Olive Garden also donated 12 complete microwavable meals for the next six days! Thanks so much!

Thank You, CARHOF

Today we’d like to thank the Colorado Association of Realtors Housing Opportunity Foundation (CARHOF) for their grant of $2,000 to Imagine!. The funds will be used for upgrades to our 19th Street Group Home.

Pictured below are Imagine! Foundation Executive Director Susan LaHoda (l) and Leanne Goff of Staufer Team Real Estate, who presented the check on behalf of CARHOF.

We are so appreciative of CARHOF’s support of some of our community’s most vulnerable citizens.

Thank You St. Vrain Flooding Relief Fund

Today we’d like to offer a hearty “thank you” to the St. Vrain Flooding Relief Fund for providing Imagine! with a $10,000 grant to help Imagine! cover some of the extraordinary costs incurred during the flooding in our area last month.

The St. Vrain Flooding Relief Fund was established by the Longmont Community Foundation to provide financial resources to charitable organizations that are involved in the relief and rebuilding efforts in the St. Vrain Valley related to the September 2013 flood.

Imagine! will use the grant to help pay for flooring, drywall, and paint for our Garden Place home. Thank you for helping us to recover!

We still have a lot of costs as we rebuild! Are you interested in helping support Imagine! as we recover from the floods? Click here to learn how!

Declaration of the Rights of People with Cognitive Disabilities to Technology and Information Access

On Wednesday, several members of Imagine!'s Executive team participated in the Thirteenth Annual Coleman Institute National Conference on Cognitive Disability and Technology. The highlight of this event was the official unveiling of a Declaration on the Rights of People with Cognitive Disabilities to Technology and Information Access. The declaration is a statement of principles: the rights of ALL people to inclusion and choice in relation to technology and information access. You can see the declaration below (click on the image to enlarge it), or you can view the declaration and read more about its formation by clicking here.

David Braddock, professor of psychiatry and executive director of the Coleman Institute on Cognitive Disabilities at the University of Colorado, said, “The formal declaration is being presented at a time when the pace of the digital age is accelerating rapidly. Access to technology and information access is essential for community and social participation, employment, education, health, and general communication. Advocates for people with cognitive disabilities may use this declaration to stimulate greater attention nationally and worldwide to the possibilities now at hand for people with cognitive disabilities through technology while promoting their rights as citizens to access to it.”

This is a momentous time in the history of serving individuals with one or more cognitive disabilities. Technology is creating opportunities for community participation and enhanced quality of life in ways unthinkable just a few short years ago. But if the folks we serve can’t access this technology, those opportunities won’t add up to much. That is why this declaration is so important.

So today, we ask all of our Foundation friends to endorse this declaration. Let the world know that the community of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the organizations and caregivers who serve them are united in the belief that all individuals have a right to access comprehensible information and usable communication technologies to promote self-determination and engage meaningfully in major aspects of life.

Go here to endorse The Declaration.

Flood Update - Ways You Can Help

There has been a tremendous outpouring of support from Imagine! employees, families and friends following the flooding last week. Imagine! is thankful for the support so far and for your support as we move forward.

After an assessment of needs, Imagine! has identified that our biggest area for recovery support will be at our residential sites. There are six homes that are seeking volunteer support to help restore the condition of the houses for the residents who live there. We have already started the process of debris removal and there is a great deal of work to be done! With that in mind, we are seeking individual and groups of volunteers who can assist with a variety projects now and in the foreseeable future.

We are currently seeking volunteers for the following tasks:
  • debris and drywall removal
  • hauling debris to the designated drop off points
  • logistics support (supplies, safety, etc)
We will be sending out updates about the progress at each site and needs that still persist during our recovery.

In the upcoming weeks/months we will need skilled volunteers to assist with:
  • hanging drywall
  • drywall mudding/finish
  • painting
  • trim and finish work
  • flooring/carpet
Imagine! needs volunteers everyday of the week between the hours of 10am-8pm (please note these times may vary based on supplies and supervision). Please consider getting involved for a couple hours or make an extended commitment by volunteering daily or weekly to volunteer as a site supervisor to assist and instruct incoming volunteers help with long term goals!

Requirements
All volunteers must be age 18 and over. For the safety of all team members, we ask that all volunteers come prepared with work boots and work gloves.
Needed tools on site include:
  • hammers
  • crowbars
  • buckets
  • shovels
***if you have the above items handy, please help our recovery by bringing your own tools.

If you or someone you know would like to volunteer to assist Imagine! during this time of recovery, please contact: Elizabeth Hill- ehill@imaginecolorado.org or at 303-926-6460.

Thank You Don and Karen Brown!

Don Brown
As you are probably aware, the recent floods in Boulder and Broomfield counties have severely impacted Imagine! and the people we serve.

The good news is that we have accounted for all clients and staff in our effected area. This includes those airlifted out of Lyons and Jamestown, those who are isolated in the mountains and safe, those dealing with their flooded homes, and those carrying the burden of care for many extended hours. The notice of the last unaccounted for employee came yesterday when we learned that she and her family were airlifted out of Lyons.

For more flood updates, check out Imagine! CEO Mark Emery’s blog. The best news from this difficult time is the way Imagine! staff, clients, and the community at large have rallied together to make sure everyone we serve is safe and sound.

You are encouraged to check out Imagine!’s Facebook page where we are sharing stories of the many heroes who are emerging during this crisis.

We wanted to use this space to offer our sincere thanks to Imagine! Foundation Board of Directors member Don Brown and his wife Karen. This selfless couple opened their home to house a displaced live-in from one of Imagine!’s homes damaged by flooding.

Thanks Don and Karen!

Garage Sale Good News

You may recall that a few weeks ago, residents of Imagine!’s Bob and Judy Charles SmartHome hosted a garage sale. During the sale, Imagine! received a $100 check from David and Catherine Burchett. David said he lives close by and told the residents “he likes the way we keep our yard.” The residents of the SmartHome want to throw a party with the money earned from this garage sale and donation. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Burchett!

Imagine!'s Out & About Summer Camp

Campers arrive one by one in the meeting room at the Boulder base-site for Imagine!’s Out & About Summer Day Camp. Meredith stays to herself for a few minutes, but soon her infectious laugh fills the room as she shows off her unique “crab dance.” Forest delights in “scaring” people, Aidan hugs his beloved iPad, and Jack gives a heartbreakingly soft and beautiful rendition of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” The day has begun.

The goal of Imagine!’s Out & About Summer Camp is to provide for every child a sense of acceptance and self among peers, an enhanced quality of life, and an opportunity to engage with the community.

When all eight campers have arrived, they and their counselors climb into cars and vans for the drive to nearby Growing Gardens where they learn about insects, catch butterflies, watch bees, smell the delicate scents of rosemary and basil, and then make and eat fresh salsa. It’s a fun-filled morning with lunch and swimming yet to come. Imagine!s Out & About Summer Camp began 15 years ago as a way to provide respite for parents caring for a child with developmental disabilities at home. But it has evolved into a full-fledged therapeutic recreation program that sets individual goals for participants and provides one staff member for two or three campers for many kids and a one-to-one ratio that allows those children with the most serious behavioral challenges to attend camp. This year 54 children aged 7-21 were enrolled at different times during the June-August camp. Some children attend five days per week every week of camp, some attend only four or five weeks out of the 10 weeks of camp, and some attend as few as one to two days per week. Activities include swimming, bowling, fishing, therapeutic horseback riding, art exploration, sports and games, and an exciting list of field trips to such varied places as Elitch Gardens, the Colorado Railroad Museum, Water World, the Denver Art Museum, and the Wildlife Experience.

Imagine!’s Out & About Manager Colette Marie, who has been with the program since the beginning, says that the Summer Camp is unique in the state. She notes, “More kids with developmental disabilities who do not have serious needs are going to typical programs, but those programs don’t have the expertise to provide for those with higher level needs, which is a specialty for Out & About.” She continues, “Our goal is to provide for every child a sense of acceptance and self among peers, an enhanced quality of life, and an opportunity to engage with the community.”

Parents have high praise for the camp. Mom Karen Leh says, “The staff works closely with parents, and we share ideas back and forth about what works best for each child. It is wonderful to know that my child will be well cared for, will engage in new experiences and learn new things, and will have fun while I am able to work, run errands, and see friends. Summer Camp is a great gift for our family.”

Summer Camp has considered expanding but is currently unable to cover increased costs for transportation, supplies, and field trips. The Imagine! Foundation would like to offer you the opportunity to support this important and highly beneficial program and to help it grow. To avoid bank and processing fees for your online gift, go to Imagine!’s page at the Colorado Gives site and designate Summer Camp in the special instructions, or you may send a check with “Summer Camp” on the memo line, and we will be sure your gift goes directly toward allowing even more children with developmental disabilities to access this rewarding camp experience! As camper Jack would say, “That’s awesome!” Thank you.

Monthly Donations: Quick, Easy, Done!

At the Imagine! Foundation, our hope is to make it as easy for our supporters to donate as possible. One of the options we want to be sure you know about is a monthly (or weekly, quarterly, or yearly) donation that you set up to come directly from your credit card or bank account. That way you can avoid the paper, spread out the cost – maybe making it possible for you to give a little more than you thought you could – and not have to worry about adding it to your “To Do List.” Set it up once, and you’re done!

Go to www.coloradogives.org/imagine. We use this site because it eliminates all bank and processing fees so that every penny of your gift goes to support the people Imagine! serves. Once you press the “Donate Now” button, you will be asked for the amount you wish to donate and then “Is this a recurring donation?” Just follow the instructions, and within minutes you will have simplified your life! We invite you to at least go to the site and look at the options. Thank you.

Florists Bring Smiles To Imagine!

Many, many thanks today to Teleflora, Denver Wholesale Florist, and Lafayette Florist, for presenting Imagine! with 470 “Make Someone Smile” floral bouquets for Imagine! staff members and clients.

Teleflora donated its popular Be Happy Mugs, the flowers were donated by Denver Wholesale Florist, and volunteers from local florists help arrange the bouquets. Locally, two non-profit organizations received the generous donation of flowers. Sandi Yosihara-Sniff, General Manager of Layfayette Florist, is an executive Board Member of the Regional Teleflora Board and recommended Imagine! as one of the two agencies to receive the flowers.

And if that isn’t enough, Sandi and her team helped to deliver the bouquets!

The bouquets were delivered to clients and staff members at Imagine!’s group homes, three-person homes, our CORE/Labor Source offices in Boulder and Longmont, and our two administrative office buildings.

Next Step Group Home Groundbreaking Ceremony A Success

Turning the dirt at the groundbreaking ceremony for Imagine!'s Next Step Group Home are, from left to right: Elaine Chavez, US Department of Housing and Urban Development; Jodi Walters, Imagine! Director of Innovations; Mark Emery, Imagine! CEO; Sam Taylor, Broomfield City Council Member; Dianne Primavera, Colorado State Representative; and Chris Mirto, PEH Architects.
Yesterday, Imagine! hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for Imagine!’s Next Step Group Home in Broomfield, CO.

The Next Step Group Home will provide safe and affordable housing for six people who have developmental disabilities as well as the multifaceted issues that come with aging. Individuals with developmental disabilities are living longer than ever, and as they age, their needs may become increasingly complex. In addition, with the “sliver tsunami” of retiring and aging baby boomers approaching, the demand for services for seniors is increasing rapidly. Imagine! is poised to be a leader in services for both the population of elders with developmental disabilities and the larger elder population. This home represents another step forward for Imagine! in developing the skills and tools needed to serve these populations.

The wide variety of attendees at the groundbreaking provided a clear demonstration of how an undertaking like this can truly only succeed with the support of the community. Attendees included: Trent Gustafson and Chuck Wellman, members of Imagine!’s Board of Directors; Mark Feilmeier, Dennis Thacker, and Elaine Chavez, from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (which is providing $633,700 in funding for the home); Broomfield City Council Member Sam Taylor; Colorado State Representative Dianne Primavera; Michele Craig, from the Colorado Department of Human Services Division for Developmental Disabilities; John McMillen from FRIENDS of Broomfield; and Michelle LaFluer, a neighbor to the West of the property who is also the owner of 2BG Equestrian School.

To learn more about this home and our groundbreaking, check out this story from yesterday’s edition of The Broomfield Enterprise.

Volunteer Spotlight

Today we'd like to highlight to fantastic Imagine! volunteers.

Susan Sahm
Susan Sahm began as a volunteer with Imagine!’s Family Support (FSSP) program in March. From
the start, Susan has been eager to learn all aspects of Family Support and is always willing to help wherever needed. From clerical and office work for Early Intervention, data entry for the Boulder County Initiative (BCI) program, or phone calls to FSSP families, Susan has had a positive impact on each of our programs in one way or another. She was instrumental in helping plan and prepare for the Family Support Provider Fair this past April, using her strong technical background and computer skills to help track registrations, plan logistics, prepare signage, and assist staff and providers at the event.

As Susan is becoming more familiar with our programs and how her many skills and talents fit with the department, her volunteer role is evolving and growing. We look forward to Susan playing a bigger role in our programs, particularly with BCI, and working more directly with individuals and families to assist them with accessing vital community services and supports. We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for Susan’s time and volunteer work to assist Family Support and the many families we serve.

Mark Killinger
Marc Killinger has been volunteering with Imagine!’s Family Support Program for a few months now. Marc’s first volunteer assignment was helping translate and interpret information for Spanish speaking families who attended the Family Support Provider Fair back in April. His outgoing and caring personality was a tremendous help to us, as we had many Spanish speaking families in attendance. Marc has also been involved in interpreting for Spanish speaking families with adult children in the Boulder County Initiative program during appointments. He has shown enthusiasm from the very start, and has been an eager learner about developmental disabilities. We are grateful for Marc’s time and bilingual talents. We want to express our gratitude for his volunteer work and for already making such an impact with the families in our department.

Thank You Primrose School of Lafayette

Today we’d like to offer a hearty “thanks” to Primrose School of Lafayette, an accredited private preschool that provides a premier educational child care experience, for their donation of $800 to the Imagine! Foundation.

The $800 was a portion of the funds the school collected during their “Spring Fling” event. The school also generously offered Imagine! employees who attended the event 10 free tickets to partake in the many fun activities during the event.

We sincerely appreciate Primrose School of Lafayette’s generosity and admire its commitment to community.

Thanking The Flower Bin

The Flower Bin has been supporting people served by Imagine! in many ways for more than five years. The Flower Bin has been gracious in donating the vegetables and flower seeds to the Growing Gardens class. In this class, the consumers learn how to plant and maintain a garden, when to harvest the produce they grew, how each vegetable can be used, and sample each vegetable. The vegetables are also used to make healthy dishes in the cooking classes.

The Flower Bin has also employed supported employment work crews for more than five years, where the crew members put together The Flower Bin’s cardboard trays that customers use to carry out their plant purchases. Being employed gives consumers the opportunity to build their confidence, learn job skills, fulfill goals of independence, earn their own money, and interact in the community.

The clients we serve and CORE/Labor Source Longmont are so thankful for the Flower Bin's support, kindness, and caring over the past years. Thank you, Flower Bin, from all your friends at Longmont CORE/Labor Source.

In the photo are some of the Growing Gardens class members giving an appreciation plaque to Kim, The Flower Bin’s annual manager, since Don Weakland, the owner was unavailable at the time of the photo. From left to right are Kim, Corrina, Jackie, and Mandy.
